A Writerly Quote

“Writing is…. being able to take something whole and fiercely alive that exists inside you in some unknowable combination of thought, feeling, physicality, and spirit, and to then store it like a genie in tense, tiny black symbols on a calm white page. If the wrong reader comes across the words, they will remain just words. But for the right readers, your vision blooms off the page and is absorbed into their minds like smoke, where it will re-form, whole and alive, fully adapted to its new environment.”

Want to Self-Publish?

CoverWe’re a pretty eclectic group of writers, and some of us have already self-published, with varying amounts of success – including self-publishing our journal. D-i-y sounds such an attractive option once you realize how little you’ll earn (or sell) with a small publisher, and how small your chance of landing a big publisher is. But how do you do it? More importantly, how do you self-publish effectively?

Nancy Woods spoke to our group once and offers many interesting classes. Coming soon is one on being your own publisher. Could we be our own publisher? Would we want to be? Could you be yours?

If you want to learn some serious stuff about how and why to self-publish, this might be the place to go. See http://nancy-woods.com/classes/ for details – it’s at the top of the page, costs $50, and takes place on Saturday Jan 30th.

Thank you Jean for letting us know about this.

Minutes 201512

17 members joined us for a great end-of-year meeting that almost felt like a party. If you missed it, you missed great food, great fun, and great writing encouragement too. I’ll try to share our discussion in these minutes, but the food has all been eaten!

Since the year was ending, Sunday seemed a good time to look at dreams and goals. And since dreams are less stressful, we started there.  Continue reading Minutes 201512

The Writers’ Mill Sells Books

Last Friday and Saturday, 4th and 5th December, Amelia, Beki, Karin and Sheila manned our table at the Oak Hills Holiday Bazaar, where we sold Writers’ Mill Journals and other books written by or contributed to by members of the Writers’ Mill. Thank you to all who helped make the event a success, especially those who stopped by our table to encourage us (and even to buy books!).

On Sunday, December 6th, Sheila was one of the authors at the Oregon Historical Society Holiday Cheer event.

If you want to be an author there next year, you need to publish a book sometime during 2016. Join us; it’s great fun (and there are Dickensian singers too!) It’s always on the first Sunday of December, and I can give you the contact information.

And for all of us, whenever or however published, don’t forget the Beaverton Library Author Fair. It took place in April last year, so watch out for more information (and please let me know when you hear anything).

The Writers’ Mill Honors Freedom and France

FOR FRANCE

So much history,
Fighting in wars past,
Your people are
France and Freedom.

Mary Jane E

Friday night frivolity turned fatal in France.
Parisians now join the global community of those under seige by unseen enemies.
That community grows.

Jennifer H

I remember they said, “We are all Americans” and everyone cried.
I remember French Fries became Freedom Fries and freedom cried.
They died and we should cry.

Writers’ Mill Minutes, October 18, 2015

Cedar Mill Library, Beaverton

Twenty-six people attended the meeting, including about seven newcomers. Among them was Donna Reynolds, who will speak to us next month about editing. Ron Davis led the meeting while Sheila Deeth was cruising in the Caribbean, having just celebrated her birthday among the alligators in the Everglades. Jean Harkin took Minutes, and Amelia De Mello provided snacks. Continue reading Minutes 201510
